WHEN EVIDENCE MEETS EXPERIENCE
A physician–patient conversation on shared treatment decisions in retinal care
How do physicians and patients make good treatment decisions when a disease is progressive, treatment options are limited and the evidence continues to evolve?
Anja Renner and Prof. Hendrik Scholl talk openly about clinical evidence, individual expectations, uncertainty and what shared decision-making means in practice.

Two perspectives. One shared decision.
Scientific evidence is essential. But every treatment decision is ultimately made for an individual patient.
The physician brings clinical evidence, medical experience and responsibility.
The patient brings personal priorities, expectations and the lived experience of progressive vision loss.
The conversation explores what happens when these two perspectives come together – and what good shared decision-making can look like in practice.
The physician’s perspective
Prof. Hendrik Scholl brings the clinical perspective:
What evidence does a retinal specialist need before considering a treatment option? How should remaining uncertainties be assessed and communicated? And when does a possible option become a treatment that can reasonably be discussed with an individual patient?
The patient’s perspective
Anja Renner lives with a progressive retinal disease and uses OkuStim.
What do patients need in order to make an informed treatment decision? How are potential benefit, uncertainty and treatment burden weighed against each other? And what role does the conversation with the treating physician play?
